Last Thursday 28 May, in that awful heat, my tyre pressure alarm came on and I pulled off the Guildford Bypass and asked for help. Their workshop was full, I could see how busy they were and they had no obligation to help me but they did. They were so kind: checked my tyre pressures and set the car computer. All done in a matter of minutes and we were back on the road. My sanity saved and faith fully restored by Pantech. If I was a local, they'd be my go-to MOT centre for ever for that kindness alone. Booked my BMW X5 in for a front and rear suspension overhaul, including new brake reaction arms, a rear shock, and an upper camber arm that had completely seized up. They got all the hardware replaced efficiently and carried out a full 4-wheel alignment that has completely transformed how the car drives. The running issue is not longer happening, new tires are great and overall was really good got it back in a few days. Very good pricing for what was done to it, people are super friendly there. What is an MOT?

An MOT test is a point-by-point assessment designed to check whether or not your car or vehicle is safe enough to drive on public roads. Every testing garage uses the same components and structural parts of your car regardless of the make and model.

When is my MOT due?

Broadly speaking, new vehicles under 3 years old will not require an MOT based on the assumption that they’re in good condition. However, any vehicle will be due for an MOT by the third anniversary of its registration. If the vehicle is over 3 years, then the MOT is always due on the anniversary of the previous MOT.

Some vehicles may need an MOT at one year old. The MOT fees table gives this information and more.

How much will an MOT cost me?

The total cost of an MOT is regulated and there is a maximum amount that test stations can charge. While the cost varies depending on the type of vehicle, a car costs a maximum of £54.85 and for a standard motorcycle, it’s £29.65. The MOT fee is VAT free.

What will happen if my vehicle fails the MOT?

If your car or vehicle fails the MOT, by having a dangerous or major problem, you will not be allowed to drive your vehicle again until the problems have been fixed.

Can I drive a car after the MOT expires?

It is illegal to drive your vehicle on the road after the MOT has expired, and you can be prosecuted if you are caught. The only two exceptions to this law are when:

You are driving to or from somewhere to be repaired.
To a pre-arranged MOT test.

What is the difference between an MOT and a service?

An MOT is designed to check whether or not your car or vehicle is safe enough to drive on public roads. In contrast, a service is designed to maintain the mechanical aspects of the vehicle and get it running at its very best. A service is not mandatory by law, but it is highly recommended to get regular services to keep the car in a good condition for safety purposes.

Can I check if a car has failed an MOT before?

Yes, you can, by simply using the DVSA’s MOT History checker to view details on your vehicle’s past MOT test results. You can find out whether it has passed or failed the MOT, where the test took place, and which parts failed at each test.
