What does wheel alignment involve?
Wheel alignment also referred to as breaking or tracking, is part of the standard vehicle maintenance that consists of adjusting the angles of wheels to the car manufacturer’s specifications. These adjustments aim to reduce wear and to ensure the vehicle travels straight without ‘pulling’ to one side.
As well as ensuring the safety of you and your passengers, correctly aligned wheels will prolong the life of your tyres by up to 12,00 miles and increase your fuel efficiency.
Toe in Toe Out
The “toe” refers to whether the front of the tyres is closer or further away from the rear of the tyres. Different vehicles will require different toe settings to allow for the way the wheels pull either towards or away from each other. An incorrect toe alignment will result in your vehicle steering to one side.
Caster and Camber Angles
The camber is the angle or tilt of the tyre viewed from the front or rear of the vehicle. A vehicle’s camber will affect the tyre wear and stability, with a zero camber setting best for going in a straight line.
The caster is viewed from the side of the vehicle and displays the forward or rearward tilt of the steering axis. A positive caster provides steering stability, while a negative caster is rare and used on heavy-duty vehicles. These can be affected by potholes on the road and may need adjusting periodically.
